Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Review

The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 is a weird little lens, and that's its main appeal. It's a catadioptric, or mirror, lens, which is why it's so short and light for a 400mm. But you need to know one thing upfront: it's a one-trick pony. It's built for one specific, quirky look, and it's not trying to be anything else. If you want sharp, modern telephoto images, look elsewhere immediately.

The optical performance is exactly what you'd expect from a mirror lens, landing in the 4th percentile. It's not sharp by modern standards, and the fixed f/8 aperture means you're always fighting for light. The real surprise, honestly, is the build quality. It feels solid and well-made, scoring in the 82nd percentile, which is a nice touch for such a niche product.

At around $299, it's a cheap ticket to experiment with a classic mirror lens look. But it's not a value in the traditional sense. You're paying for a specific artistic effect, not optical performance. If that effect is what you want, it's worth the price of admission. If not, it's a paperweight.

Don't compare this to standard telephotos. It's in a class of its own. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 or Meike 55mm f/1.8 are better 'value' lenses, offering sharpness and a fast aperture for similar money. The Panasonic 14-140mm is a vastly more versatile travel zoom. The Sony 24-240mm is a proper, modern superzoom. This Tokina doesn't compete with any of them on image quality. It's for the photographer who already has those tools and wants to play with something different.

This is a hard lens to recommend broadly. Buy it only if you're a hobbyist or artist who is explicitly chasing that swirly, donut-bokeh mirror lens aesthetic for creative projects. It's a fun second lens for specific shots, but it should never be your only or primary telephoto. For everyone else, especially anyone shooting wildlife or sports seriously, skip it completely.
