The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art delivers pro-level sharpness in a poorly built, heavy package. It's a lens of brilliant compromises and frustrating flaws.

Overview

This Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art lens is a weird one. It's optically brilliant but feels like a brick in your bag. The one thing you need to know is that it delivers pro-level sharpness and stabilization, but you're sacrificing portability and weather sealing to get it. If you're a studio shooter or someone who doesn't mind the heft, the image quality is stunning. For everyone else, that weight and build quality are real dealbreakers.

Performance

The optical performance is what surprised me, in the best way. Scoring in the 96th percentile for sharpness, this lens is ridiculously crisp across the frame, even at f/2.8. The stabilization is also top-notch, sitting in the 89th percentile, which makes handheld shots at slower shutter speeds a breeze. It's a shame the autofocus, at the 47th percentile, feels a bit sluggish and noisy compared to modern alternatives.

Value & Pricing

At $1429, it's a tough sell. You're paying for world-class optics, but you're getting last-gen build and handling. If your only priority is pixel-peeping sharpness, it has value. For any real-world shooting that involves carrying it or using it in less-than-ideal conditions, the value drops fast.

vs Competition

This lens is in a strange spot. It's competing against prime lenses like the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 or Meike 55mm f/1.8, which are smaller, lighter, and often faster, but lack the zoom range. Compared to Canon's own 24-70mm f/2.8 L II, the Sigma wins on pure optics and stabilization, but the Canon destroys it in build quality, weather sealing, and autofocus speed. You're choosing between a sharper image (Sigma) and a better tool (Canon).

Verdict

I can only recommend this to a very specific photographer: the studio-based shooter who uses a tripod, values absolute sharpness above all else, and never needs to seal out dust or moisture. For travel, events, or any run-and-gun work, the weight and lack of sealing make it a hard pass. Look at the Canon L version or a set of lighter primes instead.
