Canon EOS90D Black Review

The Canon 90D is a DSLR that feels like it's trying to do everything. You get a sharp 32.5MP APS-C sensor and a processor that can handle 4K video, all wrapped in a body that's built like a tank. It's a powerhouse for stills and surprisingly capable for video, but it's also a bit of a throwback in a mirrorless world. And that's the thing. This camera is fast, it's connected, and it's tough. But it's also heavy, lacks in-body stabilization, and its autofocus system is from a different era. It's a fantastic tool if you know exactly what you're getting into.

The 32.5MP sensor is the star here. It delivers incredibly detailed photos, landing in the 80th percentile for sensor performance. The 10fps burst shooting is also solid for action. Where it really shocks you is video, hitting the 99th percentile with uncropped 4K and Full HD 120p slow-mo. But the autofocus is its Achilles' heel, ranking in just the 2nd percentile. For stills, it's fine if you're used to DSLR phase-detect. For video or fast-moving subjects, it can feel dated and sluggish compared to modern competitors.

At around $1600 with the kit lens, the value proposition is a mixed bag. You're paying for exceptional video specs and a pro-level build in a DSLR body. If your primary need is high-quality 4K video from a DSLR and you don't mind the weight, it's a unique offering. But for that same money, you can get lighter mirrorless cameras with far better autofocus and stabilization, which makes the 90D a harder sell for general use.

Stack it up against the mirrorless competition and the trade-offs are clear. The Sony a6400 is cheaper, lighter, and has vastly superior autofocus, but its 4K video is cropped and the build isn't as rugged. The Fujifilm X-S20 costs about the same, adds in-body stabilization, and has much better autofocus, but its build quality isn't as tank-like. The Canon 90D wins on pure video output quality and durability, but loses hard on portability and focus performance. It's for a specific user who prioritizes those two things above all else.

Buy this if you're a DSLR loyalist who needs the absolute best 4K video quality from an APS-C sensor and you don't care about weight or the latest autofocus. It's also a great second body for a Canon shooter invested in EF-S lenses. For everyone else, especially vloggers or travelers, a modern mirrorless camera like the Fujifilm X-S20 or Sony a6400 will be a better, more balanced fit.
