Meike Meike 55mm F1.4 Standard Aperture APS-C Frame AF Review

The Meike 55mm F1.4 is a fast, compact prime for Nikon Z APS-C cameras like the Z50 or Zfc. It gives you that classic portrait focal length (roughly 82mm full-frame equivalent) and a bright f/1.4 aperture for creamy background blur.

It's light at just 281 grams and packs in-lens stabilization, which is a nice bonus for video or low-light shooting. The autofocus uses a stepping motor (STM) and is rated in the 97th percentile, so it should be quick and quiet.

This lens is built for portraits and low light. The f/1.4 aperture lands in the 88th percentile, so it gathers a ton of light. The bokeh quality is solid, sitting around the 80th percentile. Where it stumbles a bit is pure optical sharpness, which is in the 63rd percentile. That means it's good, but don't expect pro-level corner-to-corner crispness wide open. The stabilization is excellent at the 89th percentile, which really helps for handheld video.

At around $190, this is a compelling deal. You're getting a stabilized f/1.4 lens with reliable autofocus. That's a feature set you usually pay a lot more for. The main trade-off is the optical performance, which is good but not class-leading. For the price, that's a fair compromise.

It's a sharper value than the similar Meike 55mm F1.8 Pro, which costs more for a slower aperture. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 is wider and also a great budget option, but lacks stabilization. If you have the cash, the Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 S is optically superior and weather-sealed, but it's over three times the price and made for full-frame. This Meike carves its niche by offering stabilization at a rock-bottom price for APS-C shooters.

Buy this if you shoot a Nikon Z50, Zfc, or Z30 and want an affordable, stabilized portrait lens. The f/1.4 aperture and effective stabilization make it perfect for video work and low-light portraits. Just know its optical limits and that it's not built for rough conditions.
