AstrHori 28mm f/13 Macro Probe Review

The AstrHori 28mm f/13 is a sharp, niche macro probe lens that excels at close-ups but is hamstrung by its painfully slow aperture and lack of autofocus.

Overview

The Nikon AstrHori 28mm f/13 is a weird lens. It's not for everyone. It's a dedicated macro probe lens, which means it's a long, skinny tube designed to get right up close to tiny subjects. Forget landscapes or portraits. This thing is for photographing bugs, jewelry, or the inside of a flower. It's a full-frame lens, but with a fixed f/13 aperture, you're going to need a lot of light or a tripod.

Performance

For its very specific job, it performs well. The optical quality is in the 98th percentile, so your close-up shots will be sharp and detailed. The 2:1 magnification is fantastic, letting you get closer than most standard macro lenses. But that's where the good news ends. The f/13 aperture is painfully slow, so you'll be cranking the ISO. There's no autofocus or stabilization, so you're manually focusing a slow lens on a tiny subject. It's a deliberate, slow process.

Value & Pricing

At around $628, it's a tough sell. You're paying for a unique tool that does one thing very well. If you're a product photographer or a serious macro hobbyist who needs that probe design and 2:1 magnification, it might be worth it. But for anyone else, it's a lot of money for a lens you'll rarely use.

vs Competition

Don't compare this to normal lenses. Compared to a standard macro like a Meike 55mm f/1.8, you lose autofocus, speed, and versatility, but gain the probe form factor and higher magnification. Against a versatile zoom like the Sony 24-240mm, there's no contest. That lens does everything; this lens does one hyper-specific thing. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 is cheaper, faster, and has autofocus, but it's a general-purpose lens, not a macro probe.

Verdict

Buy this lens only if you know exactly why you need it. Are you a product photographer shooting tiny electronics? A nature photographer who needs to get inside a flower without casting a shadow? If so, this is your tool. For general photography, travel, or even standard macro work, there are far better and more flexible options out there.
