IRIX 45mm f/1.4 Review

This lens makes beautiful images but feels like it might break in your hands. It's a classic case of sacrificing everything for one great trick.

Overview

This lens is a weird one. It's a heavy, manual focus-only prime that costs over $400, and it's built like a toy from the bargain bin. The one thing you need to know is that it's a one-trick pony: if you want creamy, dreamy bokeh for portraits on a budget, it delivers. But you'll be fighting the build quality and clunky manual focus every step of the way.

Performance

The optical performance is a pleasant surprise. The bokeh quality lands in the 89th percentile, which is genuinely impressive for the price. That f/1.4 aperture gives you that beautiful background separation and lets in a ton of light. But the 'performance' of actually using it is rough. The all-plastic build feels cheap, and the manual focus ring isn't exactly smooth or precise.

Value & Pricing

It's a tough sell. At $419, you're paying for the optics and the aperture, not the experience. If you're a portrait shooter on a strict budget who doesn't mind manual focus and can live with the plasticky feel, the image quality might justify it. For anyone else, there are better options.

vs Competition

Look at the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 Z. It's cheaper, has autofocus, and is much lighter. You lose a bit of that magical bokeh, but you gain a usable, modern lens. The Meike 55mm f/1.8 Pro is another alternative; it's also manual but often feels better built. If you need autofocus and a similar look, you'll have to spend more, but you'll get a lens you actually enjoy using.

Verdict

Only buy this if you're a dedicated manual focus shooter who values bokeh above all else and can't spend a dime more. For 99% of people, the compromises in build and usability are too great. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 Z is a more sensible choice for most, offering 90% of the image quality with 200% more convenience.
