Si alguna vez has dudado entre gastar más en los últimos lanzamientos o apostar por un clásico probado, este es el momento de prestarles atención.
Hablamos de unos cascos circumaurales cerrados con drivers dinámicos de 40 mm, Bluetooth 5.0, soporte para LDAC y una cancelación de ruido adaptativa que, según nuestra base de datos, roza la perfección. No son los más nuevos del catálogo de Sony, pero el hecho de que sigan vendiéndose como churros y acumulen más de 265.000 valoraciones con una media de 4.6 sobre 5 te da una pista: aquí hay algo que funciona muy bien.
La gran pregunta no es si cancelan bien el ruido (spoiler: sí, y mucho), sino si sus puntos flacos han envejecido mal frente a lo que ofrecen Bose, Sennheiser o incluso los propios XM5. Nosotros los hemos puesto a prueba, hemos buceado en las opiniones de miles de compradores y te contamos sin filtros lo que realmente importa.
Rendimiento
Aquí el plato fuerte es el ANC. Sony consiguió con los XM4 un nivel de aislamiento que todavía hoy está en el podio, y los números no mienten: se sitúa en el percentil 98 de todos los auriculares que hemos analizado. En la práctica, eso significa que el zumbido de un avión o el traqueteo del metro se convierten en un murmullo casi imperceptible. La cancelación adaptativa ajusta la intensidad según el entorno sin que tú tengas que tocar nada, y el modo de atención rápida bajando el volumen con la mano en el auricular derecho es un detalle que se agradece cuando te cruzas con alguien.
El sonido es otro de sus pilares. Con LDAC activado y una fuente de alta resolución, los 40 mm ofrecen una escena detallada, graves contundentes sin empacho y unos agudos nítidos que rara vez resultan fatigantes. Dentro de nuestra base de datos, la calidad de audio roza el percentil 97, dejando claro que estamos ante unos auriculares que contentan tanto al que escucha podcasts como al que exige matices en sus discos favoritos. El micrófono, con sus cinco unidades y cancelación de ruido para llamadas, cumple de sobra en interiores, aunque en la calle el viento le pasa factura y se defiende peor que en algunos rivales más recientes. En cuanto a batería, las 30 horas con ANC encendido están por encima de la media, y los 10 minutos de carga rápida para 5 horas de uso son un salvavidas cuando te pillan con prisas.

Relación calidad-precio
El recorrido comercial de los XM4 ha sido curioso: llegaron a costar más de $350, pero ahora los encuentras entre $224 y $430 dependiendo del vendedor. El precio más bajo, $224, es una ganga para lo que ofrecen. Piensa que los Bose QuietComfort Ultra rara vez bajan de $300, y los Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4, aunque estiran la batería hasta 60 horas, suelen moverse en una franja similar. Por menos de $250 te llevas el que para muchos sigue siendo el rey del silencio.
Eso sí, ojo con el vendedor: la diferencia de hasta $206 entre tiendas es enorme. Si compras en el extremo alto de ese rango, los XM5 o los propios QC Ultra empiezan a tener más sentido. Nuestra recomendación es buscar el mejor precio disponible (a menudo en Amazon) y entonces sí, dar el salto sin remordimientos. A esa tarifa, el rendimiento por dólar es difícil de batir.
Frente a la competencia
Comparados con los Bose QuietComfort Ultra, la pelea está reñida. Los Bose ganan en comodidad absoluta y ofrecen un audio espacial más envolvente, pero su ANC no es claramente superior; además, suelen costar más y no se pliegan de forma tan compacta. Si pasas muchas horas con los cascos puestos y tu prioridad es no sentir presión, quizá los Bose sean más tu rollo. Si prefieres un sonido más dinámico y un precio más amable, los XM4 se llevan el gato al agua.
Frente a los Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4, la decisión se reduce a batería y firma sonora. Los Sennheiser doblan la autonomía y tienen un perfil ligeramente más cálido y detallista, pero su cancelación de ruido no llega al nivel de Sony. Los Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 apuestan por materiales de lujo y una escena sonora amplísima, aunque su ANC es menos quirúrgico y el precio de partida es notablemente más alto. Los Technics EAH-A800 son una alternativa sólida si buscas buen sonido y controles físicos, pero carecen de la magia de Sony en la cancelación. Tampoco te los recomendaría si la máxima prioridad es una comodidad celestial para jornadas interminables: los Bose QuietComfort Ultra se llevan de calle la ergonomía, y para ti esa pequeña ventaja en confort puede marcar la diferencia entre usarlos a diario o dejarlos en el cajón.

Si te mueves por el principio de "mejor cancelación de ruido posible sin arruinarte", los WH-1000XM4 son una apuesta segurísima. Su capacidad para aislarte del mundo es difícil de superar, suenan fenomenal y la batería aguanta un vuelo transatlántico de sobra. Además, al plegarse ocuparán menos espacio en la mochila que los XM5, un detalle que los viajeros agradecen.
Ahora bien, no son para todo el mundo. Si tu prioridad es una comodidad de ocho horas diarias sin pestañear, mejor mira hacia los Bose QC Ultra. Si necesitas un perfil de sonido totalmente plano para mezclas y producción, estos Sony tiñen el audio con un carácter de consumo que no te servirá. Para el resto de mortales que buscan unos cascos inalámbricos con ANC bestial, buena autonomía y un precio que ahora mismo está por los suelos, los XM4 se mantienen como una de las recomendaciones más fáciles de hacer.
