Sony W830K 32" HD Review

It's a smart TV with a dumb screen. Great Google TV brain in a 720p body. Only buy it if you care more about apps than picture quality.

Let's get the big thing out of the way: this is a 720p TV. In 2024. That's the one thing you need to know. The Sony W830K 32-inch is a paradox wrapped in a smart TV interface. It's a small, feature-packed set with a Google TV brain, but it's stuck in a 1366x768 body. For a bedroom, office, or guest room where you just need something to stream shows, it's a solid little workhorse from a trusted brand. But if you're expecting a crisp, modern picture, you're looking at the wrong screen.

The performance story here is all about the smart features versus the display. Our database shows its 'smart' and 'HDR' scores are in the 87th percentile, which is genuinely impressive for a TV in this size and price bracket. Google TV is smooth, and having HDR10 and HLG is a nice bonus on paper. But the 'picture quality' and 'display' scores are rock bottom, in the 1st and 43rd percentiles respectively. The 50Hz refresh rate and 720p resolution mean motion can look a bit blurry and details are soft. The X-Reality PRO upscaling tries its best, but you can't polish a 720p signal into 4K magic.

At around $399, the value proposition is tricky. You're paying a premium for the Sony name and the excellent Google TV smart platform. If those are your top priorities in a super compact TV, it's worth it. But if picture quality is king, you can find 1080p or even 4K sets from other brands at similar sizes for the same money or less. You're buying the brain, not the brawn.

Compared to other small TVs, the W830K's main advantage is its polished Google TV experience. A similarly priced TCL or Insignia 32-inch model might have a 1080p panel, but their smart OS (like Roku TV) often feels cheaper and slower. If you're wedded to the Sony ecosystem and just need a secondary screen, this makes sense. But if you want the best picture in a 32-inch form factor, look at 1080p models from Hisense or even older 1080p Sony Bravia models. They'll give you a sharper image, even if the smart features aren't as slick.

If you're looking for a sharp picture for movies or a responsive screen for gaming, this isn't it. The 720p resolution and 50Hz refresh rate will drive you nuts. Go get a 32-inch 1080p TV from Hisense or TCL instead. You'll get a much better image for your money.

We can only recommend the Sony W830K for one very specific scenario: you need a super compact, brand-name TV for a bedroom, kitchen, or office where smart features and ease of use are more important than having a super sharp picture. For that, it's a good fit. For anyone else, especially gamers or movie buffs, the 720p resolution and 50Hz refresh rate are deal-breakers. Look for a 1080p set instead.
