Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 F1.4 Z STM Auto Focus Ultra Wide Angle APS-C Review

The Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 is a fast, wide-angle prime for Nikon Z shooters. It's built for low light and creative control, with that bright f/1.4 aperture letting you shoot in dim places and get a nice soft background blur.

It's surprisingly capable for close-up work, landing in the 99th percentile for macro. But at over two pounds, it's not exactly a lightweight travel companion. Think of it as a specialized tool, not an all-day walkaround lens.

The autofocus is a real highlight, sitting in the 97th percentile. It's quick and quiet with its STM motor, and the built-in stabilization is solid, ranking in the 90th. That bright f/1.4 aperture is great, but the overall optical score is only in the 33rd percentile. So while it's sharp in the center, you might see some softness or distortion in the corners, especially wide open.

At around $486, it's a lot of lens for the money. You're getting a fast f/1.4 aperture, good stabilization, and great AF in a native Z-mount lens. That's a combo you'd pay much more for from Nikon. Just know you're trading some optical polish and portability for that low price and speed.

Against Nikon's own 35mm f/1.8 S, the Viltrox is wider, faster, and cheaper, but the Nikon has far superior build and optics. The Meike 55mm f/1.8 is a more traditional portrait focal length and likely sharper, but it's not as wide or bright. If you need a zoom, something like the Panasonic 14-140mm is way more versatile for travel, but it's much slower (f/5.6 at the long end) and can't match the Viltrox's low-light or background blur.

Buy this if you shoot Nikon Z and need a fast, wide prime for astrophotography, interiors, or creative close-ups. Its low-light chops and unique macro ability are legit. Skip it if you prioritize lightweight travel, flawless corner-to-corner sharpness, or a rugged, weather-sealed build.
