Lensbaby EF Velvet 85mm f/1.8 Review

The Lensbaby Velvet 85mm is a paintbrush, not a scalpel. It creates a unique soft glow for dreamy portraits, but it's a one-trick pony.

Overview

The Lensbaby Velvet 85mm f/1.8 is a weird, wonderful, and deeply flawed lens. It's not a tool for every job, but if you're chasing a specific, dreamy, vintage-inspired portrait look, it's basically magic. The one thing to know is this: you're buying an effect, not a sharp, modern lens. It's a paintbrush, not a scalpel.

Performance

What surprised me is how the 'soft glowing effect' isn't just marketing. At f/1.8, the center is soft and glowy, almost like a built-in pro-mist filter, and the 12-blade diaphragm creates gorgeous, creamy bokeh that lands in the 90th percentile. But step down past f/5.6, and it gets surprisingly sharp for close-up work, which explains its decent 74th percentile macro score. The autofocus, sitting in the 49th percentile, is fine for portraits but forget about action.

Value & Pricing

At $500, it's a tough sell. You're paying a premium for a very specific character that most modern lenses try to eliminate. It's not worth it if you need a sharp, reliable, all-around 85mm. But if that dreamy look is exactly what you need for your creative work, nothing else at this price does it this well.

vs Competition

Don't compare this to a standard 85mm like a Sigma Art. Compare it to other character lenses. The Meike 55mm F1.8 Pro is sharper and more versatile for the money, but it doesn't have this glow. A Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 will give you more sharpness and autofocus performance for less cash, but it'll look clinical next to the Lensbaby. The real competition is buying a sharp 85mm and adding diffusion filters, but that's not the same as the lens's native rendering.

Verdict

This is a hard recommendation for most people. For 95% of photographers, a standard 85mm is a better, more useful choice. But for that 5%—the portrait artists, the fine art photographers, the creatives who live for a specific mood—the Lensbaby Velvet 85mm is a brilliant, inspiring tool. Buy it only if you know exactly why you want it.
