Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Review

The Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 is a lens with one job, and it does it incredibly well. This thing is a portrait machine. Forget the travel scores, because you don't buy a lens this fast and this heavy for hiking. You buy it to get that beautiful, creamy background blur and to shoot in near-darkness. The one thing to know? It's a specialist, not a generalist, and it's built for photographers who want maximum character in a 40mm full-frame equivalent field of view.

The optical performance genuinely surprised me. Scoring in the 86th percentile for optics and 95th for bokeh means the image quality punches way above its price tag. The f/1.2 aperture isn't just a number on the box; you can actually use it wide open and get sharp, contrasty results with that dreamy background separation. The autofocus, sitting in the 48th percentile, is the trade-off. It's competent for portraits, but don't expect lightning-fast tracking for sports or hyperactive pets.

At around $578, this lens offers a level of optical performance that's hard to find elsewhere for Fujifilm X-mount. You're paying for that exceptional f/1.2 glass, not for features like stabilization or sealing. If you want that look, it's absolutely worth it.

For Fuji shooters, the obvious comparison is Fujifilm's own XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR. The Fuji lens has faster autofocus, weather sealing, and is lighter, but it's also more expensive and 'only' f/1.4. The Viltrox gives you more light and more blur for less money, but you lose the sealing and some AF speed. Also, don't confuse it with the cheaper Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Pro, which is a different, older design. This newer STM version is the one you want.

If you shoot portraits, street photography at night, or anything where subject isolation is king, this lens is an easy recommendation. Just be honest about the trade-offs: you're carrying a chunk of glass for those gorgeous shots. Skip it if you need a lightweight travel lens or shoot in bad weather. But for pure image character, it's a fantastic buy.
