Viltrox LAB AF 35mm f/1.2 Z Review

The Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 is a big, bright prime lens for Nikon Z shooters. It's all about that f/1.2 aperture, which puts it in the 96th percentile for light gathering and bokeh. You get a fast, wide-angle lens that's built for portraits and low-light work.

At nearly a kilogram, this lens is a chonker. It's not subtle, and it's definitely not for travel, scoring a low 29th percentile there. But if you want that ultra-shallow depth of field on a budget, this is one of the few ways to get it on a Z mount.

Optically, this lens is solid, landing in the 86th percentile. The f/1.2 aperture delivers beautiful, creamy bokeh and lets in a ton of light. The autofocus is just okay, sitting in the 47th percentile. It uses a quiet VCM motor, but it's not the fastest or most reliable, especially in low light. There's no stabilization, so you're relying on your camera body for that.

At around $999, this lens is a value play for the f/1.2 aperture. You're paying a premium over slower f/1.8 lenses, but you're getting a unique feature set for the Z system. Just know you're compromising on autofocus speed, portability, and build quality to get that bright aperture.

Compared to the smaller and cheaper Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 Z, this f/1.2 model gives you over a stop more light and much creamier bokeh, but it's twice the weight and price. Against a native Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 S, you lose out on blistering autofocus, stellar build, and weather sealing, but you gain that extra speed. For Sony E mount shooters, there are more compact f/1.4 options, but for Nikon Z, this f/1.2 is in a class of its own.

Buy this lens if you're a portrait or low-light shooter on a Nikon Z camera who absolutely must have an f/1.2 aperture and can't afford the exotic Nikon primes. It's a specialist tool. Skip it if you need fast, reliable autofocus for video, plan to travel with it, or want a lens that feels premium in the hand.
