Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Review
This dedicated macro lens offers stunning 2x magnification for Canon RF APS-C cameras, but only if you're comfortable with manual focus. At its best price, it's a steal.
Overview
Look, if you're shooting Canon RF and you need to get seriously close, this lens is your best friend. The one thing to know? It's a dedicated tool, not a daily walkaround lens. It gives you 2x magnification right out of the box, which means you can fill your frame with a bug's eyeball without needing extension tubes or other hacks. For pure macro work on an APS-C body, it's incredibly sharp and surprisingly compact.
Performance
The optical performance genuinely surprised me, landing in the 83rd percentile. For the price, the sharpness and color correction from those three extra-low dispersion elements are excellent. What didn't surprise me? The autofocus ranking in the 47th percentile. This is a manual focus lens for all intents and purposes, and you'll be using focus peaking and a lot of patience. It's built for precision, not speed.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Unbeatable 2:1 magnification right from the lens. 98th
- Exceptionally sharp optics for detailed macro work. 85th
- Light and compact for what it does, easy to handle. 84th
- Solid build quality feels better than the price suggests. 82th
Cons
- Manual focus only, and the focus throw is long (by necessity).
- No image stabilization, so you'll need good light or a tripod.
- APS-C coverage only, so full-frame RF shooters look elsewhere.
- Bokeh is just okay, ranking in the 59th percentile.

Value & Pricing
Here's the wild part: prices range from $399 to $1199 across different vendors. At the low end, it's an absolute steal for the optical quality you get. At the high end, it's a tough sell. Shop around, because the $399 price makes this lens a no-brainer for a macro enthusiast.
vs Competition
This lens lives in a niche. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 is cheaper and has autofocus, but it's not a true macro lens. The Meike 55mm f/1.8 Pro is a full-frame option with AF, but its 1:1 magnification can't touch the Laowa's 2:1. If you need autofocus or a more versatile prime, look at those. But if your goal is maximum magnification and detail on a budget, the Laowa 65mm is in a league of its own.

Verdict
If you shoot Canon RF APS-C and macro is your main thing, buy this lens, especially if you find it near $400. It's a specialist's tool that excels at its one job. Just know you're giving up autofocus and versatility for that stunning close-up capability. For anyone else, especially full-frame users or those who need a do-it-all lens, keep looking.
