Leica SL Body Review

The Leica SL2 delivers stunning 47MP image quality in a tank-like body, but its autofocus and price tag give you pause. Here's who should really buy it.

Overview

The Leica SL2 is a serious tool for serious photographers and filmmakers. It's built like a tank in Germany, with a 47MP full-frame sensor that captures stunning detail and a body that can handle any weather you throw at it.

This camera is all about image quality and craftsmanship. It's streamlined for professional use, with a clean menu and button layout that gets out of your way. It's not trying to be everything to everyone, it's built to do a few things exceptionally well.

Performance

That 47MP sensor is the star, landing in the 99th percentile for image quality. The IBIS is top-tier too, giving you rock-solid shots with any lens. The 5K and 10-bit video is fantastic for internal recording. But the autofocus is just okay, sitting in the 45th percentile, so it's not the best for fast action. The battery and rear display are also just average.

Value & Pricing

At over $5,000 for just the body, the SL2 is a luxury. You're paying for that legendary Leica build, the made-in-Germany engineering, and that sublime sensor. For pure image quality and durability, it delivers. But you need to really want what it offers, because you're sacrificing some modern features like class-leading autofocus for that premium experience.

vs Competition

Compared to the Sony A7R IV, you get a similar resolution but the Sony has far better autofocus and battery life for less money. The Canon R7 is a speed demon with amazing AF, but it's an APS-C sensor, so image quality isn't in the same league. The Fujifilm X-S20 is a fantastic all-rounder for video and photos at a fraction of the cost, but it doesn't have the full-frame look or the tank-like build. The SL2 trades modern conveniences for unmatched build and a certain image character.

Verdict

Buy the Leica SL2 if you're a professional who values ultimate build quality, stunning full-frame image detail, and reliable video features above all else, and you don't mind the price. It's perfect for wedding and event photographers who need a reliable workhorse. But if you need blazing-fast autofocus or you're on a budget, look at the Sony or Canon options.
