Rokinon AF 18mm F2.8 Full Frame Auto Focus Review
The Sony Rokinon 18mm F2.8 is a super compact, super affordable ultra-wide prime, but you pay for that with mediocre optics and a plasticky build.
Overview
The Sony Rokinon 18mm F2.8 is a weird little lens. It's an 18mm prime, which is super wide, but it only opens up to f/2.8. That's the main thing you need to know: this is a niche lens for a specific kind of shooter who wants a compact, wide field of view but doesn't need super fast glass. It's not a low-light monster, and it's not built like a tank. It's a simple, affordable way to get that ultra-wide look on a full-frame Sony camera without breaking the bank or your back carrying it.
Performance
Honestly, the performance is about what you'd expect for the price. The autofocus lands in the 47th percentile, so it's fine for static scenes or slow-moving subjects, but don't expect lightning speed. The optical quality is in the 34th percentile, which means you'll see some softness in the corners, especially wide open. The real surprise, though, is how small and light it is. For a full-frame 18mm, it's a pocketable little thing, and that's its biggest practical advantage.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Extremely compact and lightweight for a full-frame wide-angle. 96th
- Affordable entry point to the 18mm focal length. 66th
- Internal focusing keeps the lens length constant and helps with weather resistance.
- The f/2.8 aperture is decent for astrophotography or interiors when you stop down a bit.
Cons
- Optical performance is mediocre, with noticeable softness away from the center. 17th
- Build quality feels cheap and it's not weather-sealed. 22th
- The f/2.8 aperture is a letdown for low-light situations compared to faster primes.
- Autofocus is merely adequate and can hunt in low contrast.

Value & Pricing
At $259, it's hard to call this a bad value, but it's a compromised one. You're paying for the focal length and the compact size, not for stellar image quality or premium features. If those two things are your top priorities, it's worth it. If image quality is king, you should look elsewhere.
vs Competition
This lens lives in a strange space. Compared to the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7, you're trading a useful, versatile focal length and a much brighter aperture for extreme width. The Viltrox is arguably more useful day-to-day. Against something like the Meike 35mm F1.8, you again lose that fast aperture for width. The real competition is other ultra-wide primes, and here the Rokinon wins on price and size, but loses on outright sharpness and build to more expensive options from Samyang or Sony itself.

Verdict
This is a lens for a very specific user: the budget-conscious traveler or vlogger who needs a lightweight, ultra-wide angle for landscapes or selfie-style videos and is willing to accept some optical compromises. For everyone else, especially those who value sharpness or low-light performance, a standard wide-angle like a 35mm f/1.8 is a much more versatile and satisfying choice. Only buy this if you absolutely need 18mm and absolutely can't spend more.
