The ASUS ROG Strix G16 delivers strong 1080p gaming performance, but makes serious compromises on screen quality and portability to hit its price.

Overview

The ASUS ROG Strix G16 is a solid mid-tier gaming laptop that gets the fundamentals right, but it's not here to win any beauty contests. The one thing you need to know is that it's a performance-first machine. It's packing an Intel 14650HX CPU and an RTX 5060 GPU, which is a great combo for 1080p gaming. Just don't expect it to be sleek or have a killer screen.

Performance

The performance is exactly what you'd hope for from these specs. The RTX 5060 lands in the 83rd percentile for GPU power, so it chews through modern games at that 1080p, 165Hz target. The 16-core Intel CPU is no slouch either, sitting in the 82nd percentile. What surprised me, though, was how average everything else felt. The 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD are fine, but they're just that—fine. Nothing about the supporting hardware screams 'premium'.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Excellent 1080p gaming performance with the RTX 5060. 95th
  • Strong multi-core CPU handles gaming and streaming well. 86th
  • Wi-Fi 7 is a nice future-proofing touch. 83th
  • The 165Hz screen is smooth for fast-paced games. 72th

Cons

  • That 1080p screen is only in the 43rd percentile. It's functional, not fantastic. 10th
  • It's a chonker. At 2.64kg and in the 11th percentile for compactness, this is a desktop replacement. 21th
  • Port selection is weak, scoring in the bottom 21st percentile.
  • Battery life is a complete unknown, which is rarely a good sign.

Value & Pricing

Prices are all over the place, from $1443 to $1899. At the low end, it's a decent deal for the core performance. At $1899, you're paying a premium for the ROG name and not getting much else. Hunt for the cheapest vendor; the extra $456 isn't buying you a better laptop.

vs Competition

This sits in a crowded field. The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i is its direct rival, often with a better screen and build for similar money. The MSI Vector 16 HX is another one to watch, sometimes offering more GPU for the price. And if you're not strictly gaming, the Apple MacBook Pro M4 runs circles around it for creator work, but costs way more and can't game natively. For pure Windows gaming, the Legion is usually the tougher competitor.

Verdict

If you want a no-frills, powerful 1080p gaming laptop and you find it for around $1500, the ROG Strix G16 is a good pick. But if screen quality, portability, or a sleek design matter to you, look at the Lenovo Legion or even some MSI options first. This is a tool, not a trophy.
